The Rotary Club of Sutherland supported two local schools to compete in this year’s Model United Nations Assembly.

On Saturday 7 June 2025, the grandeur of NSW Parliament House echoed with vigorous debate as 19 schools stepped into the shoes of world leaders for the annual Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA). Thanks to the Rotary Club of Sutherland, two Shire teams — Kirrawee High School (delegation of Israel) and Inaburra School (delegation of the United Arab Emirates) — took their places at the negotiating table.

Over a fast-paced nine hours, delegates wrestled with three real-world UN resolutions:

1. Assessing global food insecurity

2. Combating the glorification of Nazism

3. Addressing the risk of nuclear proliferation in the Middle East

Our Shire students spoke with poise and moral courage, the chamber brimming with energy as mock delegations from Russia, Ukraine, China, France, and others sparred over wording and values. Ultimately, the United States delegation secured first place, but every student left with sharper critical-thinking skills and a deeper appreciation of global citizenship.

The Rotary Club of Sutherland supported this initiative by sponsoring these schools to attend, with our own Youth Director David Morton attending on the day to offer our club’s support. This great initiative allows local youth to learn about global perspectives of peaceful conflict resolution, cultural understanding, and ethical leadership.

MUNA 2025 reminded us that tomorrow’s peacemakers are already among us; they simply need a platform. Rotary Club of Sutherland will continue to provide that stage—locally, nationally, and globally.
