Bright lights and bright minds combine to in the Science and Engineering Challenge
The Rotary Club of Sutherland are proudly celebrating the success of the Science and Engineering Challenge, held on 29–30 May 2025 at ANSTO, where the creative energy of tomorrow’s innovators lit up the venue. Run by the University of Newcastle, the event brought together enthusiastic students from various schools, all eager to demonstrate their skills that spanned across electronics, environmental science, and scheduling competitions.
Our very own club members, David Morton and Jonathon White, shone brightly in their roles as activity coordinators for the lively “Confounding Communications” station. Here, keen young minds designed intricate codes using coloured lights to send hidden messages, an activity that ignited curiosity and practical problem-solving. The excitement was palpable as each participant embraced the challenge with creativity and teamwork.
On day two, Jonathon White experienced an extra dose of excitement when he was invited to judge the exhilarating Bridge Building competition. In this contest, slender balsa wood bridges—light as 120 grams!—were ingeniously designed and tested to withstand weights up to 8kg, showcasing impressive engineering feats and resilience under pressure.
This exceptional event not only highlighted the future of science and engineering but also perfectly embodied the Rotary Club of Sutherland’s commitment to community engagement and educational excellence. We remain dedicated to empowering young minds and nurturing the passion for innovation that will shape our tomorrow.
